Prof. Smith was a visionary professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Berkeley, where he led collaborative work that championed the poor and disenfranchised, especially rural women and children in the developing world. He was a towering figure in environmental health who helped the world understand that the burning of dirty household fuels was devastating the health and well-being of women and children around the world. The Kirk R.
